When it Involves a Child

The legal system treats cases involving children differently. Understanding these processes can help you protect your child from further harm during the investigation.

The Process

What to expect

Forensic Interview

A specially trained professional will talk to your child in a child-friendly environment. This is recorded to minimize the number of times they have to tell their story.

Medical Exam

A "SANE" (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) or pediatrician will check for injuries and collect evidence. This should always be done with the child's comfort in mind.

In some cases, a court-appointed representative will ensure the child's best interests are prioritized throughout the legal process.

Confidentiality

The identity of child victims is protected by law. Ensure that schools, neighbors, and extended family respect this privacy.

Your Role

Being their advocate

You are your child's voice in a system that can be overwhelming. Don't be afraid to ask questions or demand better treatment.

  • Ask for updates: You have the right to know the status of the investigation.
  • Request child-friendly spaces: If a meeting is scheduled in a cold, intimidating office, ask for a better alternative.
  • Monitor their behavior: Watch for changes in sleep, eating, or school performance, and report these to their therapist.
  • Keep a paper trail: Document all interactions with police, social services, and medical professionals.

The child's needs come first

The goal of the legal system is justice, but your goal is your child's well-being. If the process becomes too much for them, you have the right to pause and re-evaluate.
